I first heard about Kayden when I stayed at her mom’s house on the Big Island when I was taking Hula Kahiko lessons many years ago. I finally had the chance to meet her when I stayed on Maui a few summers ago. It was one of those funny coincidences where she heard from other friends that a perfumer was coming to visit. And in fact, I was the same perfumer that her mother knew. Maui is a big but small place – it’s easy to drop into a scene and even easier when you have friends of friends who know each other. We immediately bonded over perfumes and visited the Ali’I Chang Lavender Farm up the road on Haleakula. Aroma Village catches up with Kayden.
AV: Aloha Kayden. It’s been a long time! I remember when I stayed at your house, you had beautiful perfumes, body care products, candles, and jewelry. I think lots of people think of Hawaii or any tropical place as smelling like sun tan lotion. But that sun tan lotion smell is really for tourists, isn’t it? What I appreciate about your line of products is how much they really smell like true Hawaii – like your Volcano, Rain Forest and Ocean and Island Breeze. What was your inspiration behind these particular fragrances?
KR: Aaah….first of all, I must comment on your excellent memory and recapturing the moments past. Actually that is part of the magic of fragrances, they take you back to the precise moment you first smelled such a scent. I started out with just two fragrances, my original ASA cologne and Rain Forest. I had just been on a trip to Lahaina, the major tourist area of Maui, to make deliveries, and I noticed all the new competition in the locally made Bath & Body market. I realized I needed to expand my range of scents, because if someone did not like the particular fragrance I had created, then I did not have a customer in that moment. Rain Forest was my latest creation and I knew that was the one I could expand upon so along the lovely drive home from Lahaina, the beauty of the Ocean called to me, and I wanted to offer a scent that is refreshing, playful and joyful.
I then realized it would be nice to have a theme and the idea of the Four Elements popped into my head so of course Ocean would be Water, and as I would keep Rain Forest, that could be Earth The scent of Rain Forest is warm vanilla and green, with the Maile vine being a major component in this lovely blend. For the Fire element I had the Haleakala Volcano in front of me as I drove home, and I knew that a spicy, warm scent could evoke the magic of the Volcano energy that created the Hawaiian Islands. I also knew that the scent of Plumeria is a very lovely flower that graces the many walkways throughout Hawaii and it is definitely a scent that fills the Air, whether they be around someone’s neck in a lei, or growing prolifically throughout the islands thus Island Breeze was created as the Air element. And there you have a whole line created in the 45 minute drive from Lahaina to upcountry Kula where I was living.
AV: What makes Maui in particular so magical is its diversity. You do have the ocean everywhere but where you live in Kula, you’re actually up the mountain/volcano and it gets really chilly at night, right? What elevation is that? Do you still have that amazing window view of the whole valley? How do you deal with living on paradise everyday?
KR: Yes, it does get rather chilly here. Your memory continues to serve you well. My ever changing picture window shows me so many beautiful sunsets and dramatic views of the 5 Island view I have from my home…Maui, Molokini, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai (on a clear day). I am at about 2,000 ft elevation. This is a really lovely climate with the warm days, cool nights, not too much rain or wind.
My life is quite filled with my two businesses, as well as taking time to get to the beach, visit my brother’s community on the remote Kipahulu side of the island and taking month long trips to the mainland here and there.
AV: You are also really passionate about Blue Bottle Love. Sym.blue.ology is derived from symbols, blue glass and ecology and based on Dr. Masuro Emoto’s groundbreaking work on water crystals as well as the philosophies of Joe Vitale and Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len. The ancient Hawaiian ritual of Ho’oponopono cleansing is inherently in these bottles, right? So you fill up the blue bottle with water and leave it in sunlight for an hour and let the sun charge the energy of the water? It sounds amazingly easy! Why don’t more people know about this? Where can we buy it?
KR. Great questions and very accurate in describing the various aspects of Blue Bottle Love. I would have to say that more people do not know about this yet, because not enough people are yet conscious that it is imperative to stop drinking water out of plastic bottles and buying water in plastic bottles. There are so many toxins in the plastic, and water is such a unique entity, holding the memory of the energy directed towards it. Water is It is the record keeper and we have the ability to influence what records are kept. That is why I put positive words and symbols on the bottles.
I must say I have not yet done my major promotion on this line yet, the production has been rather exclusive, and mostly available in Hawaii and Southern California with various retailers speckled throughout the US. I have recently sent large orders to Canada and Europe and I plan to expand this year and definitely by 2013, Blue Bottle Love will be more widely available across the country. More and more people are waking up and realizing the importance of health and the role of water and frequencies, and learning that they have the power to empower their water, thus their bodies, with positive energy.
I will be focusing more of my time and energy on this line. I am actually looking to pass the reins over to someone who wants to take After Sea Aesthetics Tropical Elements to the next level. I find it very challenging to focus full force on both lines, and it is not fair to either line that they are not number 1 in my life!! When you must choose between two life partners, you need to go where your true destiny lies. Blue Bottle Love came to me through divine guidance and I know it is my true calling at this time.
